The Shadwick Biomechanics Laboratory (SBL) is located in a 1,100 sq. ft. space in Hubbs Hall on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus.  Equipment and supplies are present to facilitate various research projects.

Electronics Bench
Contains all the necessary components required to create and test circuits, fabricate transducers.

Computer Bench

Hardware and software required to analyze data, edit photos, print documents, access network.  We operate on a PC-based paltform in the SBL, but have access to the Mac platform as well.

Materials Testing Facility

We have two industrial sized machines for performing both static and dynamic tension/compression testing of materials.  The machine pictured below right is an MTS minibionix model 250. This hydraulic actuated machine can a wide range of loads to materials during testing.

The machine pictured above left is a converted Monsanto tensometer.  Originally, the device applied loads by screw-driven displacement of the crosshead.  Now, we use the crosshead to position a vibrator.  The vibrator is capable of applying dynamic (sinusoidal) loading to the test specimen in a controlled manner.

Biochemistry

One full room is dedicated to biochemical/chemical pursuits. This room possesses two fume hoods, four benches, and is stocked with necessary equipment and reagents for (among other things) the purification and study of proteins.

(shown here is the North    side  of the room.  The South side of the room is a mirror image.)
